JETRO

Acronym for the Japan External Trade Organization, that assists both Japanese and other foreign companies with trade, business relations or investment in the Japanese domestic market.

Joint Account

Typically, a bank account held by two or more people or businesses, each of who has complete authority and discretion to use the account as needed.

Joint and Several Account With Right of Survivorship

A joint account whereby, upon the death of one of the account holders, the remaining account holder (or holders – business or personal) become full and complete owners of the decedent account holder’s interest by operation of the terms of the account agreement itself.

Joint and Several Liability

A liability involving two or more parties, which is each party’s liability individually and independently as well as a liability shared aggregately by both parties.

Joint Liability

A liability shared by two or more parties, wherein each party has a right to demand that the other parties perform at a level consistent with the performance of any one party or company.

Joint Ownership

An ownership interest held by more two or more parties in which each has the authority to sell, lease, transfer, encumber, or otherwise manage or deal with the item as if they were the sole owner.

Joint Tenant

A lessee who shares its leasehold interest with another party, who may or may not also be in possession of the leased property; the term is typically used in connection with real estate leases and is not appropriate for use in connection with a personal property lease.

Joint Venture

A business activity of common purpose between two or more parties pursuant to an agreement to share profit and losses, management responsibilities and other business responsibilities and benefits as decided between them and at a mutually agreeable responsibility sharing percentages.

Joint Venture Lease

A lease transaction with two or more lessors; usually only two lessors are involved and they may be shown on the lease documentation as co-lessors; larger transactions with more lessors would more typically be structured with a lead lessor and a participation agreement; joint venture leases are strategically utilized and very helpful in cross-border lease transactions where a local lessor is needed for tax based reasons or local government regulatory compliance.

Judgment

(Legal based) The final determination of the court in conclusion of a lawsuit.

Judgment Creditor

1. A party in whose favor a court makes a financial award as part of the judgment concluding a lawsuit. 2. A party who has received a judgment in a lawsuit awarding it money to be paid by a judgment debtor.

Judgment Debtor

1. A party against whom a court makes a financial award as part of the judgment concluding a lawsuit. 2. A party who has had a judgment entered against it as a result of a lawsuit and has to pay money to its judgment creditor.

Judgment Lien

The encumbrance that arises by law against a judgment debtor and in favor of a judgment creditor as the result of a financial award in the judgment at the conclusion of a lawsuit. The encumbrance is typically discharged by the payment of the judgment award or the passage of time.

Judgment Note

A promissory note given by a judgment debtor to a judgment creditor to provide for payment of the judgment in a deferred, (i.e. installment based) manner; typically utilized to avoid immediate seizure and execution upon the judgment debtor's assets.

Judicial Settlement

A settlement reached after the filing of the lawsuit and entered as an award made by the court, which then makes all legal remedies available for enforcement of a judgment available for breach of the settlement agreement.

Jurisdiction

The territorial or geographic legal authority to hear a legal dispute or exert legal authority over a party or a given subject matter

Jurisdictional Dispute

A dispute arising from the uncertainty of the appropriate judicial tribunal to impose authority or to hear a contested legal matter.
